Introduction
The goal of the significant environmental project Ripple Warriors is to preserve and restore Sri Lanka’s Natpattimunai wetland habitat. The project’s main goal is to reduce plastic pollution by educating
entrepreneurs, local communities, and students about the negative
effects of plastic on the environment. Young people are empowered to take sustainable action by Ripple Warriors through practical activities like awareness campaigns, clean-up campaigns, and green entrepreneurial projects. The project encourages long-term
environmental stewardship by working with local government,
non-profits, and schools. This inspires small-scale changes that have a long-lasting positive impact.
Action
The project engaged the community by training locals and students on microplastic pollution through an awareness campaign and volunteer cleanup at Natpattimunai wetland. An awareness board was erected to educate the public on sustainable practices and wetland protection. The initiative also promoted green entrepreneurship, encouraging youth and local businesses to create products from microplastics. Collaborating with schools, NGOs, irrigation officers, and municipal authorities, with approval from education directors, ensured smooth project implementation. A tree planting initiative was carried out to improve biodiversity and support environmental restoration. Future plans include recycling training, a Green Marketplace, and an Eco Competition to strengthen sustainable habits in the local community.
Project Objective
• Encourage sustainable practices to reduce and reuse microplastics and educate students and school officials at Natpattimunai Sivasakthi Maha Vidyalayam and KM/KM Al Aksha Maha Vidyalayam about the effects of microplastic pollution on the Natpattimunai wetland ecosystem, emphasising its role in climate resilience.
• Empower young people and community members by holding
creative competitions, choosing the best projects to turn microplastics into products with added value, and working with
non-governmental organisations to address climate and wetland
conservation issues while encouraging green entrepreneurship in
order to create sustainable revenue and support climate action.
Impact and Results
The Ripple Warriors project has successfully safeguarded the
Natpattimunai wetland by raising awareness and fostering community involvement. Students from KM/KM Al Aksha Maha Vidyalayam and Natpattimunai Sivasakthi Maha Vidyalayam actively participated, alongside local businesses, educators, and NGOs. A shramadhana cleanup improved ecosystem health, while tree planting enhanced biodiversity. An awareness board was installed to educate visitors on microplastic pollution and sustainable practices. Collaborations with municipal authorities, irrigation officers, and school officials secured approvals for integrating environmental activities into schools. To ensure sustainability, relationships with local communities were strengthened, with plans for an Eco Competition, recycling workshop, and Green Marketplace to further promote conservation efforts
